Writing the perfect job announcement is as much as an art as it is a science. You want to reach as many potential candidates as possible while still deterring those non-qualifying candidates that will be a complete waste of your time. In order to do this, you need to make sure that your job announcement tells potential candidate what they both need and want to know, as well as the atmosphere of the setting that they will be hired to work in. As tricky as this may seem, it’s actually pretty easy. And if you do it correctly, you will have quality candidates applying to the position in no time.

Make It Unique to Show What Kind of Company You Are

There are thousands of plain and boring job announcements out there. When your job announcement is boring, you’re going to get boring candidates applying to your vacant position. Most companies give the very basics in their job advertisements. They mention the company, the duties of the position, and the qualifications that one must have to be considered for the position. This method will get people to apply to your open position, but the results probably won’t be what you were hoping for.

Instead of doing the same thing that every other company is doing, start by making your announcement fun. Use humor, sarcasm, satire or anything else you can think of that will attract the type of candidates that you’re interested in. Instead of stating that, “Company X has an immediate opening for a receptionist,” try something like, “Company X’s receptionist of 30 years FINALLY retired, which means we can FINALLY hire someone else.” Amuse your candidates. The act of trying to find a job is difficult and stressful enough as it is.

Another thing you want to make sure you’re doing is stating information that many companies leave out of their job advertisement. One of these things deals with salary. Some people won’t even bother applying to your position if they don’t know how much they’ll be getting paid. If you know the salary that you’re offering is on the low side, state it on the advertisement. For example, you could state that, “Salary: $32,000. We know this is on the low side, but here are a perks that you will receive from working at our company.” List those perks even if they don’t have monetary value. You could talk about how lovely the location is, how wonderful the other workers are, and even things like annual parties. The trick to writing the perfect job announcement is making it less about formality, and more about finding someone who will fit in with your company. Take some time to show why working for your company will be a great decision for potential candidates. You’re expecting them to come in there and sell themselves during the interview, so you should be doing the same with your job advertisement. Be unique, but hold back on anything that could possibly be considered rude or offensive to potential candidates. Remember, some things aren’t as easily understood when written as you may hope.
